Same logic puzzle, completely different experience. Here's the breakdown.
If you've played minesweeper before — on Windows, on your phone, or in a browser — you already know the core: reveal cells, read numbers, avoid mines. Bean Boom keeps all of that intact. What it adds is a second layer of gameplay that turns minesweeper from a pure logic puzzle into something that also rewards speed, combo-building, and calculated risk.
This article breaks down exactly what's the same and what's different, so you know what you're getting into before you start playing.
Bean Boom's Classic Mode is traditional minesweeper, full stop. If you've played any version of minesweeper before, you'll feel at home immediately:
Every pattern, deduction technique, and strategy from traditional minesweeper applies. If you've read our strategy guide or studied minesweeper patterns, that knowledge transfers directly.
Bean Boom's Egg Mode is where things diverge from traditional minesweeper. In Egg Mode, you're not just trying to clear the board — you're trying to score as many points as possible while doing it. The scoring system adds four mechanics that don't exist in traditional minesweeper:
| Feature | Traditional Minesweeper | Bean Boom Egg Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Clear the board | Clear the board with maximum score |
| Win condition | Reveal all safe cells | Same, but score matters |
| Flagging | Optional memory aid | Triggers Bean Boom explosions |
| Chain reactions | None | Cascading blasts from correct flags |
| Combo system | None | 3-second window multiplier |
| FEVER mode | None | k≥20 streak triggers 4× multiplier |
| Leaderboard | Time only | Score-based with ranks S/A/B/C |
In traditional minesweeper, flagging a mine does nothing except place a flag. In Egg Mode, correctly flagging a mine triggers a Bean Boom — an explosion that radiates outward (up to 4 cells) and clears safe cells in its radius. If the blast reaches another correctly flagged mine, that mine detonates too, creating a cascade chain that can clear huge sections of the board in seconds.
This completely changes flagging strategy. In traditional minesweeper, you flag mines to remember them. In Egg Mode, you flag mines to weaponize them. (More on this in our flagging guide.)
Every action that earns points — revealing a cell, flagging a mine, triggering a blast — feeds a combo counter. If you chain actions within a 3-second window, a multiplier increases with each consecutive action. Let the timer expire and the multiplier resets. This means raw speed matters in Egg Mode in a way it never does in traditional minesweeper.
Build a combo streak of 20 or more and you enter FEVER mode — a temporary state where the score multiplier caps at 4.0× and blast radii grow by one cell. FEVER is the key to S-rank scores. The full math is in our high score guide.
The honest answer is: both, depending on your mood.
Imagine playing the same Easy board (9×9, 10 mines) in both modes:
| Aspect | Classic Mode | Egg Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Opening click | Reveals cells normally | Same, plus score for each cell revealed |
| Flagging a mine | Places a flag, nothing else | Triggers Bean Boom blast + score + combo |
| Clearing the board | Win! Time recorded | Win! Final score = (raw score + flag bonus) × time multiplier × difficulty coefficient |
| Mistake (hit a mine) | Game over, see all mines | Same — Egg Mode doesn't punish extra, but you lose your combo |
| Leaderboard | Ranked by time (Easy/Medium/Hard) | Ranked by score with S/A/B/C rank |
Traditional minesweeper is a perfect logic puzzle. It has been for decades. Bean Boom doesn't try to replace it — Classic Mode is traditional minesweeper, available for free in your browser with no download.
What Bean Boom adds is Egg Mode: a way to play minesweeper that's built for people who love the logic but also want the rush of combos, chain explosions, and score-chasing. It's the same brain, different heartbeat.
Start with Classic Mode to learn the ropes (our beginner guide takes about 10 minutes), then switch to Egg Mode when you're ready for the game to fight back.
