Two ways to play minesweeper. Same board, different heartbeat.
Bean Boom gives you two game modes from the main screen: Egg Mode and Classic Mode. Both use the same minesweeper rules, the same board sizes, and the same difficulty options. But they play very differently, and choosing the right one depends on what you want out of your minesweeper session.
This guide breaks down the differences so you can pick the mode that matches your mood, skill level, and goals.
| Classic Mode | Egg Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Core loop | Reveal cells, flag mines, clear board | Same, plus score every action |
| Win metric | Time (faster = better) | Score (higher = better, with S/A/B/C rank) |
| Flagging | Memory aid only | Triggers Bean Boom explosions |
| Speed matters? | Yes (for leaderboard time) | Yes (combo 3-second window) |
| Chain reactions | No | Yes (cascading blasts) |
| FEVER mode | No | Yes (4× multiplier at k≥20) |
| Leaderboard type | Time-based (Easy/Medium/Hard) | Score-based with rank tiers |
| Paid challenges | Yes (clear board to win back wager) | No |
| Best for | Pure logic, calm play, learning | Adrenaline, score-chasing, combos |
Classic Mode is minesweeper as it has existed for decades. No scoring systems, no combos, no explosions. You reveal cells, read the numbers, flag mines, and clear the board as fast as you can. The timer runs from your first click to your last safe reveal, and your best times go on the time-based leaderboard.
Classic Mode is also where Bean Boom's paid challenges live. You wager a participation fee, and if you clear the board within the challenge's win-count requirement, you get your money back in full. It's a skill-based challenge — not gambling — because the outcome depends entirely on your minesweeper ability, not on chance.
Egg Mode keeps every rule of Classic Mode and adds four layers on top:
Every action earns points: revealing a safe cell (+10), triggering a Bean Boom blast (+20), flagging a mine correctly (+15, doubled to +30 with combo), clearing the board (+25). In Classic Mode, these actions are invisible. In Egg Mode, they're the whole point.
Chain actions within a 3-second window and a combo counter rises. Each consecutive action multiplies your score. Let the window expire and the combo resets to zero. This means Egg Mode rewards speed in a way Classic Mode doesn't — not just "finish fast" but "act fast, constantly."
In Classic Mode, flagging a mine is just marking it. In Egg Mode, a correct flag triggers a Bean Boom — an explosion that radiates up to 4 cells and auto-reveals safe cells in its radius. If the blast reaches another flagged mine, that mine detonates too, creating a cascade that can clear half the board in one glorious chain. (Learn how to maximize these in our flagging guide.)
Build a combo streak of 20+ and you enter FEVER — a temporary state where the score multiplier caps at 4.0× and blast radii grow. FEVER is what separates S-rank scores from A-rank. The full scoring math is in our high score guide.
If you're new to minesweeper: Start with Classic Mode on Easy difficulty. Learn the numbers, the flagging, and the deduction loop without any extra mechanics. Once you can reliably clear Easy boards, try Egg Mode to see the scoring layer in action.
If you already know minesweeper: Jump straight into Egg Mode. The scoring system is intuitive if you already understand the base game, and it makes flagging fun in a way traditional minesweeper never managed.
If you want to compete on leaderboards: Both modes have global leaderboards. Classic Mode ranks by time — pure speed. Egg Mode ranks by score with S/A/B/C tiers — a blend of speed, accuracy, and combo management. They reward different skill sets, so try both and see which you rank higher on.
If you want to try paid challenges: Challenges are Classic Mode only. The skill-based wagering system (participate, win, get your money back) is designed around pure minesweeper ability. See the challenges page for details.
Yes. You can switch between Egg Mode and Classic Mode at any time from the game screen. Your best times and best scores are tracked separately, so switching doesn't erase your progress in either mode. You can also use URL parameters to start directly in a specific mode: /?mode=classic or /?mode=egg.
Classic Mode is the game you already know. Egg Mode is that game with a turbocharger. Neither is "better" — they're for different moments. Play Classic when you want to think. Play Egg when you want to explode things.
